Research

Be part of the world-renowned research going on daily at UCLA. Here are some helpful hints to get you started.

What do I look for in a project?

  1. Area of interest – This will keep you coming back for more.
  2. Location – Can you fit this into your breaks between classes? Is it accessible on weekends if necessary?
  3. Time commitment – Be clear about your priorities and learn to be flexible. If you can’t commit the hours the lab is asking for, it’s okay, try to come up with a compromise quarter by quarter.
  4. Able to get units for your experience – You can use 2 quarters of PS 199/198 for the major, and any other 199s for Upper Division units to graduate.

What should I bring with me to a research position interview?

  1. Resume – Include all of your work experience (paid or volunteer). Attend a resume writing workshop at the Career Center
  2. Degree Progress Report/Unofficial transcript – Faculty might want to know the courses you have completed to get to know your background
  3. Knowledge of the lab and its function – You can look up our professors in the URL (Undergraduate Research Library) or Biomedical Library in CHS and find articles with their research. Even if you just read one, it shows motivation and wanting to understand the research process.
